However, in the business sense, I have decided that networking is very much like gardening. You spread seeds around. Many pop up right away and then get eaten by a slug. Some escape and just grow slow and steady. Some lie dormant for a while and eventually, when conditions are right, they spring to life and flourish. You spend a lot of time when it looks like nothing is happening while the roots are taking hold. Eventually you get plants that can be totally different from what they started out as or what you expected. It’s all pretty unpredictable and it takes patience, but its a fun process with generally good (and occasionally fantastic) results. – Miriam Jorgensen

The son refused to criticize his father’s rule. But, tellingly, he did not cite him or any other person when he was asked whether he had any African political models. “If you look at Africa,” he said, “it’s just full of misery, poverty, wars. While Socrates says that the story he describes will seem like fiction to Callicles even though it is fact, this is merely used to mark the reality of politics in Athens, that what seems like fact for Callicles is mere fiction for Socrates… In Socrates’ case, Athens did not want statesmen, they wanted despots cloaked in the trappings of democratic rule – Utz McKnight
Things will be better when we have
1) No borders (free movement of all humans to wherever they wish to go)
2) No military (with no borders there will be little to defend)
3) No money (when we can all get what we need/want without exchange – then and only then will there be peace)
I do not believe in money – it has no basis in truth. It is artificial and acts to separate rather than unite. How can you, who sees the love and joy family can bring, desire anything less than a family of humans who live in harmony with our planet? It is always strange to me when people set their goals so low. Is having happiness for your immediate family really all you want?

If you want to belive in something then believe in it. Just because something isn’t true that’s no reason you can’t believe in it. Sometimes, the things that may or may not be true are the things that a person needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. There’s honor, courage and virtue in everything. That power and money… money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. That true love never dies. It doesn’t matter if it is true or not. Great lis! Was looking for the speech to young men given by “Hub” in Secondhand Lions and found it here!
A minor criticism though from an old retired soldier, a little too many quotes that slam war vs. peace. Not that I have anything against peace; it’s just that it is achieved, more times than not, after victory on the battle field.
Jack
Thank you Jack.
I disagree that peace is achieved after victory on the battlefield. Actually, I would argue just the reverse.
I am glad we live in a world were folks are free to disagree =)
Ulan; Not sure it’s a freedom the whole world enjoys but for the most part, you are absolutely right – it’s great that we are free to disagree! That’s just one of the rights granted us by those who put on the uniform and marched off to war!
But to your first comment – Can you name historic examples of peaceful times that weren’t achieved as the result of armed conflict? Again, wish with every fiber of my being that war were not necessary but I believe that it’s pretty much hardwired in our species. Despite one group’s best intentions, another group will ultimately throw itself upon the first just because of what it has, what it believes, or for just being there. That ususlly follows a period in which the second group blames the first for all the social and ecomomic problems besetting its society.
Jack
Again, thank you for your comments. I am happy to see that you feel strongly about your position and have thought on it. Please understand than I feel just as strongly about mine. It may be that we can not agree… but I doubt it. Instead, I think you see the world as it is and I dream of what it can be. I speak because I want to get us to this better place.
>Can you name historic examples of peaceful times that weren’t achieved as the result of armed conflict?
Can you name one that was?
Certainly you can say for the short term there was “peace” but not from the long term. I have a 3 year old and I see him getting into conflicts all the times with folks. None of them are settled through armed conflict. When battles do rage, folks either apologize and agree to get along or they no longer speak. Your statement makes me think you believe the second outcome is “peace”. I think it is simply folks refusing to learn to get along because someone has the option NOT to get along. Peace, to me, is living together, not apart.
Look at the world conflicts today. They all involve someone who is strong refusing to give what someone who is weak wants. If you look closely, the strong are usually the aggressors and the weak simply want to be left to live their lives without interference. In my world view, war is never the answer. It may “solve” the problem today, but it does not unite us into a single family.
There are exceptions of course. In WWII “evil” was running rampant. But I would ask you to look closely at the relationship to those who fought against this evil and ask why they allowed it to get to the state it did? Germany could not have done what it did without outside support. We kept trading with them and giving them winks and nods of encouragement until very late in the game. Look at Iraq today. They were our friend and helped us test our bio weapons on live subjects. bin Laden was paid by us to fight against the Soviets. The list goes on.
We, as humans, must learn to live together. Relying on weapons/military to settle our problems only pushes us further from the truth that we all want the same thing – peace. We can not get peace through war. This is not 1984.
Or put another way, if we spent all our energy waging peace we would get a lot more of it.
>Despite one group’s best intentions, another group will ultimately throw itself upon the first just because of what it has, what it believes, or for just being there.
I would argue that if we want peace we can not have poverty/injustice. When the rich have at the expense of others, the needy will always be set against them. There is plenty of wealth for us all. If we seek to provide the minimum for all and those with little have “enough”, I believe you will find that those with more live in far less danger than they do today. “Protecting” wealth is the #1 role of the military. If everyone had food, clothing, housing and education, I doubt many would need much protection…
