Thoughts on complicity

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

One thing the Ruling Class does not have to generally concern themselves with is how other people think. Some who have time for the pursuits of the spirit become intellectually curious about different ways of thinking. For the most part, however, Rulers do not worry about what their subjects believe so long as they behave. You will find throughout the history of oppression that folks in charge are concerned more with the “rule of law” than fairness. Actually, it is a common thought that the “rule of law” leads to fairness.

What I find so troubling is that in 2006, we in the USA (those who rule the world), know so little about other ways of life. We think of the followers of Islam as backwards. People who do not love the Global Economy are Luddites. Those who do not sacrifice family for money are foolish. Yet we claim that we are followers of God’s Will while we flaunt the number one law of loving your fellow human as we love ourselves.

I recently had a discussion that went something like this:

If you have to choose between losing money at your business and spending more time with your family or spending less time with your family but making more money… you should always choose to make more money since you can spend time with your family later. That time later will be better spent since you will have more capital to spend on them.

In my world view, the most important thing is to care and love your family and friends. Nothing else is as important. Those who are truly enlightened understand that all humanity is one family. If this is true then taking care of all humans is paramount. If you must chose, chose family first.

But why must we live in a world that makes us choose? Why can we not find a way to organize our lives so that we are rewarded for caring for humans and discouraged from caring for wealth? Are we still living in a world of scarcity where we must fight for what little we need to survive? Why, if the world is so bountiful, can we not find a better way?

That, in a nutshell, is what motivates me. I want to find a better way. I want to find a way where all humans can get what they need without depriving others of life?

…it was her turn to receive her family’s sustenance for the next month: half a jug of cooking oil and two bags of rice and maize.

Have we really come to this? With my $400 iPod sitting next to me, is it really so important that I have so much while others have so little?

I remember in my Political Science classes that folks would make the argument that if we did not have money and exchange, folks would not be motivated to work. Look at the failure of Communism they would say. I simply can not believe that the woman in the story above is not motivated to work. Instead, I believe it is the failure of our system of politics that says she has no value and should therefore starve. Can we really find nothing “productive” for her to do? Is she just one more wasted cog in this machine that must grind on?

Even if she has no wealth and can produce nothing of value for our society, should ANY human have to suffer like this? What possible benefit can this bring to humanity? How can the starvation of millions benefit us? All those lives, all those humans willing to work to make the world better, can we really not find anything for them to do? What kind of sick and twisted Ruling Class would abide a system that kills so many?

I have to find a way out of this madness. If not for me… then for my ancestors who know this is not right. I stand today, accused of complicity in this war on humanity. What will I do to turn the tide? What will I do help save our souls?

Hackers Get Windows XP on Apple Computers

The game has now been changed. This signals a massive “reset” of the players and field and a new game is about to begin.

And how did this all happen? I believe this is a perfect example of the power of the Open Source model of software development. Microsoft said it could not be done. Apple refused to take part. Folks bellowed about EFI, lack of drivers and why should we even be playing this game to begin with?

And some upstart from who-knows-where figured it out in under a month.

The challenge was to get Windows XP to boot on the new Intel-based iMac

Some nut put $100 of his own cash into a pot and said; “Come and add your cash to the pile I plan to give to the person who can make this work.” A month goes by and the pot is up to over $13,000. Wow! You mean that is all it takes for someone to stay up nights and figure out how to make XP boot on a Mac?

There is simply no way a large firm like Apple or M$ could pay $13k to get this type of functionality. And this is just the beginning of the hacking. Most folks who will throw in improvements will do so for nothing. BitTorrents already has the bootable working Mac OS X 10.4.4 Install DVD for x86 machines floating around. Another week, maybe two, and someone will create a simple installer. Running multiple OS’s at the same time can not be far away.

1,000 motivated hackers will always beat the best in-house team of developers given an equal start. There are 10’s of thousands of developers out in the world who love to hack this way. Everyone contributes a little something. Many hands make light work.

In-house developers have a two main advantages: They know the platform and the requirements. If there is no money in the pot, they also have the advantage of getting paid.

Open-Source Development, on the other hand, has a few benefits itself. The main one is just about unlimited resources. The USA got rich not because we were the smartest or had the best natural resources. We had an unpaid labor force that would work 6 days a week from dawn ’til dusk. China now has a similar labor force and it is raising even quicker than the USA did. Open-Source developers work for little or nothing and are motivated beyond reason.

The only way closed-source development will continue to excel is by hiding the platform and the requirements. Patents are key here since they allow the patent holder to define the rules of the game.

Am I rambling? Certainly. It is 3:30am and I am a happy camper. The seed of change has been planted. XP will run on Macs and Linux already does. If Apple makes the best hardware and choosing OS X means you can run the three most popular OS’s… why choose? Why not have it all?

The future is bright indeed.

How can I listen to NPR? It is supposed to offer “news”. The other morning I had it on by mistake and the top three stories were

1) Saddam testified in court
2) Rice met with someone in Australia about terror
3) Some fires that burned up a lot of ground

Fear, fear and more fear. Where are the stories about people changing the world for the better? Where is the hope? Where is the love? While I know the revolution will not be televised, I figured we might at least hear about it on the radio. Instead all we hear is government propaganda aimed to keep us cowering.

What is the point? I am not afraid of the dark. Why should I fear my government?

What have I created?

“Sorry baby, but we can not play Elmo right now cuz Daddy has to hang the curtains”

With a fiendish grin he reaches over and drags the tool off the table and states; “That is why I brought the hammer!”

OMG… what monster have I created?
