I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/measureformeasure.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/03\/which-side-are-you-on\/\" target=\"_blank\">her blog<\/a> and appreciated her words on how we define ourselves through the songs we listen to. Well, I am proud to know and love one of hers.<\/p>\n<p>And he said, &#8220;I want to live as an honest man<br \/>\nTo get all I deserve and to give all I can<br \/>\nAnd to love a young woman who I don&#8217;t understand<br \/>\nYour highness, your ways are very strange.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[display_podcast]<\/p>\n<div class=\"vertical-10\"><\/div>\n<p> <!-- end class=\"vertical-10\" --><\/p>\n<p>The soldier came knocking upon the queen&#8217;s door<br \/>\nHe said, &#8220;I am not fighting for you any more&#8221;<br \/>\nThe queen knew she&#8217;d seen his face someplace before<br \/>\nAnd slowly she let him inside.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;I&#8217;ve watched your palace up here on the hill<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;ve wondered who&#8217;s the woman for whom we all kill<br \/>\nBut I am leaving tomorrow and you can do what you will<br \/>\nOnly first I am asking you why.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Down in the long narrow hall he was led<br \/>\nInto her rooms with her tapestries red<br \/>\nAnd she never once took the crown from her head<br \/>\nShe asked him there to sit down.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;I see you now, and you are so very young<br \/>\nBut I&#8217;ve seen more battles lost than I have battles won<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;ve got this intuition, says it&#8217;s all for your fun<br \/>\nAnd now will you tell me why?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The young queen, she fixed him with an arrogant eye<br \/>\nShe said, &#8220;You won&#8217;t understand, and you may as well not try&#8221;<br \/>\nBut her face was a child&#8217;s, and he thought she would cry<br \/>\nBut she closed herself up like a fan.<\/p>\n<p>And she said, &#8220;I&#8217;ve swallowed a secret burning thread<br \/>\nIt cuts me inside, and often I&#8217;ve bled&#8221;<br \/>\nHe laid his hand then on top of her head<br \/>\nAnd he bowed her down to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tell me how hungry are you? How weak you must feel<br \/>\nAs you are living here alone, and you are never revealed<br \/>\nBut I won&#8217;t march again on your battlefield&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd he took her to the window to see.<\/p>\n<p>And the sun, it was gold, though the sky, it was gray<br \/>\nAnd she wanted more than she ever could say<br \/>\nBut she knew how it frightened her, and she turned away<br \/>\nAnd would not look at his face again.<\/p>\n<p>And he said, &#8220;I want to live as an honest man<br \/>\nTo get all I deserve and to give all I can<br \/>\nAnd to love a young woman who I don&#8217;t understand<br \/>\nYour highness, your ways are very strange.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the crown, it had fallen, and she thought she would break<br \/>\nAnd she stood there, ashamed of the way her heart ached<br \/>\nShe took him to the doorstep and she asked him to wait<br \/>\nShe would only be a moment inside.<\/p>\n<p>Out in the distance her order was heard<br \/>\nAnd the soldier was killed, still waiting for her word<br \/>\nAnd while the queen went on strangling in the solitude she preferred<br \/>\nThe battle continued on<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have always had a special place in my consciousness for this tune.
