Re: Should I use podomatic.com for my podcasts?
The answer depends on what you are looking for. If you want something that is free and easy and podcasting is a hobby for you, sure. If you are a professional, podomatic has two major faults:
1) You lose control of your content
Once you upload your content you no longer control it. I doubt you even own it. You certainly have no rights to limit its distribution.
2) You are given a tiny amount of storage.
Media files are by definition large files. 500Mb is a tiny amount (less than 5 minutes of good quality web video or about 500 minutes of good quality audio). Even when you bump up to the “Pro” version you only get 2Gb.
“podPress adds a lot of features designed to make WordPress the ideal platform for hosting a podcast.”
We use podPress for all our podcasting websites. It is easy to configure, works great and is simple to use. It can even be configured to post your podcast automatically on iTunes.
I >>HIGHLY<< recommend you host your on podcasts. Once you put your primary content on another server you lose control of it an are subject to their issues. If you host the files yourself, you can always migrate to a new host with minimal problems.
Podcast works by distributing a link to the actual podcast media file. Where that media file is stored is of no importance to the person grabbing the podcast. The distributed link can be found on iTunes and a bunch of other places that help folks find podcasts.
Remember, that the finding of the link to the podcast is separate from the hosting of the podcast media file.
