<itunes:summary>Treme is a great series about New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The show is created by the same folks who made my favorite TV show of all time: The Wire. Many of the same cast members of The Wire star in Treme. [Note: I absolutely HATE HBO's website. It is a total disaster. I am only linking to it out of respect for the creators of The Wire an Treme. Ugh. What a horror show.]
The first season of Treme was difficult for me because I really wanted to like it, but something just did not seem right. One glaring problem was that the sound was off. You could tell that the musicians were not actually playing their instruments and when folks were dancing it was often to a different beat than the music we could hear. For a show that centered on music… this was a deal killer.
The second season was quite different. It started off with a bang. The writing was different. the annoying characters either disappeared or were marginalized and… the sound was much improved. By the second or third episode I was actually looking forward to the next show. By the time I had finished the 6th show I was totally hooked.
Anyhoot. The scene below is quite well done and I thought I would share it. The MP3-only version follows as does a nice version by the Staple Singers.

Noah’s Lullaby – Kohomua – Lyrics
Weee-ooooh
Aaaahhh
Weee-ooooh
My Noah
I can feel it when you cry, yeah
I can feel it when you frown
I can feel it when you’re happy, my son
And I can see it in your smile
I love the way you make me feel
When I hold you in my arms
You are the sunshine that brightens every day, my son
You keep me going strong
Weee-ooooh
Noah, yeah
Weee-ooooh
Zion
I want to be the shoulder you can cry on
I’m going to be the one you can lean on
You know you can look to me for answers
You know that every question is revealing
You know that I will never lead you wrong
You know you are my everything, my sunshine
You are my everything, yeah
You know you are my everything
You are my everything
Me and your mother should be fine
Yes, we should stop our fighting
Because we’ve got a wonderful son
Ooooh-weeeooooh
Aaaahhh
Weee-ooooh
My Noah
Mmm… yeah
Mmm… yeah
Mmm… yeah yeah
Ahhh… yeah, ahhh yeah
I will never forget that day
I remember the day you first came into my life
You make everything seem bright
Your first cry came to me on a message
I started to cry, I started to cry
When I heard your sigh
Oh my son
You’re such a blessing
Oh, I won’t be long
You know I’m missing, missing you
I’m missing you
I promise to you I’ll make it up
I promise to you I won’t screw up
I won’t screw up
Mmm… yeah
Ohh… yeah
Such a blessing
In this world
Such a blessing
In this world, my baby
Such a blessing
In my world…</itunes:summary>

Here are the lyrics (as best I can determine).
Roots in dispair
Nothing is right
Out of the darkness
Shine up the light
Come along, child
Come along… child
Jah Jah makes the heavens
Earth and the seas
Wipe away transgression
Rule with equality
Come along, child
Come along… child
Follow your heart
Do what feels right
Are you worthy of your love
Are you worthy of your life
Come along, child
Come along… child
But why wave the gun
Police and the cuff
Dig a pit for you
In the middle of the road
Come along, child
Come along… child
I’d rather spend all of my days
On the peak of Mount Zion
Than wallowing in pity
In the pressure of Babylon
Come along, child
Come along… child
What pleases you now
Hurts you further down the road
Lift up your voice and
Truth will be told
Come along, child
Come along… child
Plenty of love
To go around
For everyone
To be safe and sound
Come along, child
Come along… child
Respect the balance, people
And ignorance
The roots don’t know what
The leaves have in mind
Come along, child
Come along… child
Jah Jah rules the earth
Heavens and the seas
Wipe away transgression
Rule with equality
Come along, child
Come along… child
Follow your heart
Do what feels right
Be worthy of your love
Be worthy of your life
Come along, child
Come along… child</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
I went to see Race To Nowhere last night and this song by The Weepies opened and closed it. While I liked the song, I’m not sure how I feel about the movie.
It will be compared to Waiting For Superman for obvious reasons. As the folks I saw it with pointed out, one was made by men and the other by women. Superman, as the name implies, is all macho and identifies specific problems and, supposedly, offers definitive solutions. Similar to the white men who created it, they do not explore alternatives, some of which are far more likely to succeed.
They have an agenda and are going to hit you over the head trying to convince you they are right. They are brash, follow the trendy ‘scorched earth’ method of discussion and in the process, fail miserably at what they say they are trying to accomplish. I believe their real goal is to give up on public education and justify the privatization (for profit!) of education.
Race To Nowhere, like the women who produced it, are much more sanguine and reflective. They raise questions but do not have answers. They are OK with that. Women don’t always need to solve everything. It is enough to know they are not happy.
That being said, the questions they raised affect an extremely small and select group of children. While they tried to bring in kids of color from Oakland and Richmond primarily, this was a movie about white suburban angst. Parents worry about their children’s success in this newly competitive world. The parents never ask if they, themselves, would have been admitted to the colleges they attended if they were forced to compete with everyone rather than just the other white privileged suburban children from their time.
I was deeply moved by the discussion of teen suicide. I did find it strange that no children were interviewed who had witnessed a killing of a student, which is far more common in public education than suicide. Stressing our children, whether through achievement or poverty, is a terrible thing. We should allow our children to be just that, children. They should be able to live free of the worries and stressed of adulthood as long as possible.
I am happy Race To Nowhere opened a new discussion on what we want our education to accomplish. Do we want well-rounded critical thinkers? Or do we want students who can test into Cal only to remediate 50% of them because they don’t actually know anything. I hope our society takes up this discussion. We really do need to find answers.</itunes:summary>
