Ripple – Grateful Dead
Monday, October 30th, 2006If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It’s a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they’re better left unsung.
I don’t know, don’t really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.
There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who’s to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

Good Thoughts / Bad Thoughts – Funkadelic
Friday, October 27th, 2006Travel like a king
Listen to the inner voice
A higher wisdom is at work for you
Conqering the stumbling blocks come easier
When the conqueror is in tune with the infinite
Every ending is a new beginning
Life is an endless unfoldment
Change your mind, and you change your relation to time
You can find the answer
The solution lies within the problem
The answer is in every question
Dig it?
An attitude is all you need to rise and walk away
Inspire yourself
Your life is yours
It fits you like your skin
The oak sleeps in the acorn
The giant sequoia tree sleeps in its tiny seed
The bird waits in the egg
God waits for his unfoldment in man
Fly on, children
Play on
You gravitate to that which you secretly love most
You meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts
There is no chance, coincidence or accident
In a world ruled by law and divine order
You rise as high as your dominant aspiration
You descend to the level of your lowest concept of yourself
Free your mind and your ass will follow
The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers
Its nature is to respond to your thoughts
Be careful of the thought-seeds you plant in the garden of your mind
For seeds grow after their kind
Play on, children
Every thought felt as true
Or allowed to be accepted as true by your conscious mind
Take roots in your subconscious
Blossoms sooner or later into an act
And bears its own fruit
Good thoughts bring forth good fruit
Bull**** thoughts rot your meat
Think right, and you can fly
The kingdom of heaven is within
Free your mind, and your ass will follow
Play on, children
Sing on, lady…

Nice take on why folks are poor. Worth a read.
FontExplorer

I need some advice. I have a font problem! All of my thousands of fonts are showing up in all my apps in the font lists. Therefore it is making the apps work really slow. This just happened suddenly.
I checked the status of the fonts in Font Book. All the fonts that should be on are on and the ones that are not needed daily are turned off like always. So why are they showing up on my lists in my apps? This is really a strange thing to happen!
I have restarted my computer a few times to see if it will reset as
normal! I am on mac os 10.4.8 I upgraded InDesign the other day – Adobe asked me if I wanted to update – so I did.
Please let me know if you have any ideas of what I could do.

Hi Jules,
It might have been, that your system, or some program, tried to re-install all fonts again. Microsoft Word is a typical candidate for such an action. When you install Office, the installer looks into the system library, and not realizing the fonts are there but only not active, it installs them all again. That’s just due to bad programming on the developers side. I don’t know, but it’s possible this also happened with InDesign. It might even have asked you to do it and you clicked okay, without knowing it would cause this havoc.
The way to get rid of the problem you won’t like, but I don’t see another way: You have to look into your system library, and manually remove the fonts in there. They are stored inside “Username” > “Library” > “Fonts”. If this folder is empty, they are stored in the system library, not the user library. Then it’s in “Macintosh HD” > “Library” > “Fonts”. But beware, there are a lot of fonts that must be stored there! All system fonts should be there, such as Lucida Grande and the fonts that came with the Mac OS. I know this is confusing, because how can you tell what is supposed to be in there and what not?
The key here is to understand, there are three libraries on your system, but only one should contain some fonts, but not all, just the ones that come with Mac OS.
Mac OS comes with its own font management tool. But it’s not really the best tool. It’s way better than Extensis Suitcase, simply for the fact that Suitcase has a reputation of destroying the fonts it turns off/on. But personally, I prefer a different tool, which I found much better. It comes from Linotype, but it is capable to manage all fonts, so I don’t have to use Fontbook any longer. It looks and works a little bit like iTunes, so it’s straight forward and not hard to learn.
FontExplorer is freeware and you can read more about it and download it here:
http://linotype.com/fontexplorerX
Once you install it and run it for the first time, it will move all your fonts out of your fonts folders (except for the system fonts) and put them in a library of its own. You need administrator access on your system to do this.
All my desktop publishing contacts (print companies etc.) use it now, so it has become a standard here.
I hope this helped a little. If not, I’m also available on iChat and Skype, or here.
Best Regards,
Henning

Then I installed it and replied to him…
Thank you so much. I just installed it and it asked me to either copy or move the font files. I actually asked it to copy them as I was a little worried about moving them ! Did I do the wrong thing? Anyway, just wanted to let you know that it seemed to have worked. I no longer have six million fonts show up in Photoshop! Will open all the apps in a minute! Thanks so much for your help! I could not even see the text in emails at one point!
Let me know if I installed it right! If i did not then what should i do now?
Cheers
Jules

Well, it’s good to be cautious. :) But the problem is, by not moving them, only copying, you now end up with both, the new font library, and your fonts are still stored in the system library as well. Which means you duplicated your problem of a slow computer, because now it will load your fonts twice.
This can’t be reversed, except if you delete the preference file for FontExplorer, as well as the library it created. :( Which I assume is not something you feel comfortable with doing on your own.
If you have no longer millions of fonts showing up in Photoshop, and in addition your computer isn’t too slow now, maybe you just leave it as it is. The way FontExplorer works is very similar to iTunes. It creates an XML file (a database) that stores all fonts and locations. It may be I’m wrong with duplicating the problem—it’s hard to tell, without having a peek on your hard drive.
Bottom line is, if it works now, leave it like that! ;)
And you won’t have to use FontBook again. It’s better you use FontExplorer from now on. It’s a lot faster too! And you may have figured out already how to create sets, for projects, or by font vendor. You turn off/on a font by clicking the familiar blue check box next to the font’s name. By the way, double clicking a font gives you a nice window with some example text.
You should keep in mind, this works similarly like iTunes. So Fonts are all stored in the library left atop, but you can create sets that contain font references, for easier management.
Best Regards,
Henning

Monday, October 2nd, 2006Gallery 2 is an amazing collection of code. Wow! The deeper I look, the more impressed I become. While the documentation is very good [surprisingly good in fact], I have had to hunt quite a bit for answers. Below is a collection of links that I found helpful in my journeys.

How To Purchase An Apple Laptop
Sunday, October 1st, 2006So you are looking for an Apple Laptop… You can always purchase through the regular apple.com website or walk into any of the local Apple Stores in your area.
If you wish to support YVOD, you can make your purchase (for the same price) through the special Agent Store. For YVOD to get credit you need to put in our Agent ID – AA071652 – on the final checkout screen. There is no advantage to you by checking out this way, but it does slide my company a few commission pennies =)

Now that the foolish stuff is out of the way, there are really only two options for a laptop when it comes to owning a Mac. The MacBook and the MacBook Pro. If you are using your computer for anything other than serious Photoshop/Video/Sound work, I suggest you purchase a MacBook. The one exception to this is for “Road Warriors” who need the extra “expansion slot” that comes with the Pro.
It really is an easy decision. We have sold dozens of MacBooks and only 3 Pros. That is not to say the Pros are not great machines, they are. But the MacBooks are so good that it just does not make sense for most folks to go with the more expensive option.
There are three MacBooks to choose from. The cheap one is, well, cheap and does not burn DVD’s [it reads them just fine]. The second option costs $200 more, is a tiny bit faster (you will never notice the difference) and burns DVD’s. The final one adds another $200 to the price, comes with a slightly larger hard drive (+20GB) and a sleek black exterior. Before you laugh, EVERYONE who has chosen the black one is happy they did. I do mean everyone. For what it’s worth, I own the cheapo option with maximum memory and a larger hard drive (as discussed below).
—-
I suggest that everyone purchase additional memory. It is the cheapest way to get the most out of your computer. 1GB total (+$100 through Apple) is the minimum anyone should have and I strongly suggest folks pump it up to 2GB. Apple is insane and sells 2GB for $500. If you want 2GB, purchase the memory through YVOD and let us install it (takes 15 minutes) for a total of $350.
The only other option I suggest folks think about is to increase the size of their hard drive. If you are happy with 1GB of extra memory, go for the 100GB hard drive upgrade (+$150) through Apple. If you have YVOD install the memory, I suggest you purchase the hard drive through us as well so you get the most value for your dollar. $160 gets you a 120 GB drive (instead of a 100GB through Apple).

I like AppleCare since it gives peace of mind for two extra years. If anything goes wrong, Apple will fix your computer for free. Is that worth $250 to you? It is to me.
You probably don’t need anything else besides a case to carry your new computer in. My favorite are the MarWare bags but everyone has different needs.
PS: One last note. While not strictly an issue with the purchase a lot of folks ask me about Windows running on their new Mac. Yup, it really is easy.
If you want the most compatibility and do not mind restarting every time you run Windows, choose Apple’s very own Book Camp. If, like me, you want to run both Windows and Mac OS X at the same time, purchase Parallels Desktop for $80 and have the best of all worlds (Linux included)! For either option you will need your own copy of Windows.
YVOD charges $150 to install either option but then you must purchase through the Agent Store and I suggest you ship the unit directly to us. As the consultant who is responsible for Windows installations said of my cheapo MacBook; “No fair! Your >>LAPTOP<< is faster than my $3,000 gaming machine and it is also running Mac OS X! How did Apple pull that off?!?!?!”
