A few general Hotline rules:

1) Read the news. Administrators often leave valuable info at the bottom.
2) Don’t use real names – ever.
3) Do not pester people. They will chat with you if they feel like it.
4) Sharing involves giving.
5) Be kind. Love life.

If you care to read up on it, the history of Hotline is pretty cool. Long live Adam Hinkley!

Alternate SMTP Port

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Most folks who connect you to the internet (called Internet Service Providers or ISP’s) allow you to send and receive mail at will. YVOD offers a simple set up for all email accounts:

Username: <full email address> (eg: ulan@yvod.com)
Password: <password>

POP3 Server: mail.yourdomain (eg: mail.yvod.com)
SMTP Server: mail.yourdomain (eg: mail.yvod.com)

—-

The internet is still a wild place and this set-up will not always work. Unfortunately, some folks choose to limit what email servers you can use to SEND your email. Why? I have heard that it is to better monitor what folks send (scary). Another argument is that they place filters on your account to cut down on spam. This is bogus since that is our job if you use our mail servers. Whatever the reason, you need a solutions…

Fortunately there is a very easy way to get around these limits. Sending mail normally goes out on “port 25″. All you have to do is change this port number and you are done. YVOD operates SMTP servers on ports 587 and 20025 and you can use one of these instead.

Instructions for Eudora, Apple’s Mail.app and Outlook are below.

Eudora: Simply place a colon after the SMTP server along with the desired port (eg: mail.yvod.com:587). Alternatively you can modify the SMTP for the entire application by placing this text <x-eudora-setting:7211> in the body of any message and clicking on it.

Aaron Neville – With God On Our Side

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Call me late to the party, but I just found Aaron Neville. Yes, I have heard him before but often confused him with the lead from Fine Young Cannibals ;) In any case, I grabbed 50 or so of his songs and have been replaying this Bob Dylan tune for a while now. It is amazing what an anti-war person I am becoming. I have always believed in peace but something is happening to me. I kinda like it =)

Lyrics

With God On Our Side

Oh, my name it ain’t nothin’,
My age it means less.
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest.
I’s taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
That the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh, the history books tell it,
They tell it so well:
The cavalries charged,
The Indians fell.
The cavalries charged,
The Indians died –
Oh, the country was young,
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day,
And the Civil War, too, was
Soon laid away.
And the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize,
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys,
It came and it went;
The reason for fighting
I never did get.
But I learned to accept it,
Accept it with pride;
For you don’t count the dead
When God’s on your side.

The Second World War, boys,
It came to an end.
We forgave the Germans,
And then we were friends.
Though they murdered six million,
In the ovens they fried,
The Germans now, too, have
God on their side.

In the 1960s, came the Viet-Nam War;
Can somebody tell me
What we’re fightin’ for?
Too many young men died,
Too many young mothers cried;
So I ask the question,
Was God on our side?

I’ve learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life.
If another war comes,
It’s them we must fight.
To hate them and fear them,
To run and to hide,
You never ask questions
When God’s on your side.

[LAST TWO LINES IN PUBLISHED VERSION:]
[And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.]

[VERSE OMITTED:]
[But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust.
If fire them we're forced to,
Then fire them we must.
One push of the button,
And a shot the world wide;
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.]

Through many a dark hour
I been thinkin’ ’bout this,
How Jesus Christ was
Betrayed by a kiss.
But I can’t think for you,
You have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot had
God on his side.

Now as I’m leavin’
I’m weary as Hell.
The confusion I’m feelin’
Ain’t no tongue can tell.
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor;
And if God is on our side,
He’ll stop the next war.

Shelter – Ray LaMontagne

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Shelter

I guess you don’t need it
I guess you don’t want me to repeat it
But everything I have to give I’ll give to you
It’s not like we planned it
You tried to stay, but you could not stand it
To see me shut down slow
as though it was an easy thing to do
Listen when
All of this around us’ll fall over
I tell you what we’re gonna do
You will shelter me my love
And I will shelter you
I will shelter you
I left you heartbroken, but not until those very words were spoken
Has anybody ever made such a fool out of you
It’s hard to believe it
Even as my eyes do see it
The very things that make you live are killing you
Listen when all of this around us’ll fall over
I tell you what we’re gonna do
You will shelter me my love
I will shelter you
Listen when
All of this around us’ll fall over
I tell you what we’re gonna do
Hey you will shelter me my love
I will shelter you
If you shelter me too
I will shelter you
I will shelter you
